FUN IN THE SUN
Fishing
The town of St Helena Bay has developed as one of the major centers of the fishing industry. The bay, therefore, offers anglers wonderful angling opportunities from rocky outcrops and protected beaches, from small boats within the bay, or from the harbor walls near the iron-ore jetty.
Best Snoek Ever
In the Western Cape, the snoek braai is a universally shared social occasion. This hardy fish is as commonly enjoyed, as it is easily found in the cold waters of the west and southern coast of South Africa.
Bird Life
St Helena Bay is also a bird watcher's paradise and being at the southernmost point of the migratory route from Europe and the Steppes of Russia makes it a must-visit spot for twitchers.
Breathtaking Sunsets
We love nothing more than a sundowner, a breathtaking view, and an epic sunset. And what a sunset it usually is: the sky streaked with candy floss-pink clouds and the sun slipping beneath the horizon as it bathes all in soft, golden light.
Flowers
The natural phenomenon of flower season along the Weskus in the Western Cape draws thousands of visitors from around the country and from around the world, between August and September each year; but the wildflowers have been known to bloom as early as July and as late as October, depending on weather conditions. These flowers are absolutely beautiful to see.
Some History
Vasco da Gama’s expedition reaches St Helena Bay
The Portuguese expedition set off from the Tagus River on 8 July 1497 with a crew of 148 men in a squadron of three square-riggers, the Sao Gabriel, the Sao Raphael, the Berrio, and a supply ship. The commander-in-chief, Vasco da Gama embarked on the Sao Gabriel accompanied by his pilot, Pedro de Alenquer. Vasco's brother, Paulo, captained the Sao Raphael. For almost four months they sailed across the Atlantic without sight of land until, on *4 November 1497, they reached a bay (current-day St Helena). Vasco da Gama named the bay Bahai da Santa Elena (St Helena Bay), after the Religious Mother of Constantine the Great. Close to, or near the mouth of the Berg River, the explorers set in to make repairs, look for water, and check their position. It was here that they had their first encounter with the Khoikhoi. A misunderstanding arose between them, and fearing attack, the Khoikhoi threw spears, wounding Da Gama in the thigh.
